Happy St George’s Day
Well today is St George’s Day, the day when us English shuffle about wondering whether to celebrate the day with the bonhomie typical of other national days such as St Patrick’s Day or whether we’ll be regarded as fully signed up members of the national front.
A recent survey by the government agency revealed that fewer than one in five people mark St George’s Day on April 23rd, suggesting that the English feel less national pride than the Welsh, Irish and Scottish.
In an effort to rectify the situation, English Heritage has produced a St George’s Day Guide, which suggests recipes and traditional games with a St George and the Dragon theme.
How do you think the English should celebrate St George’s Day? Should councils organise street parties or parades to mark the occasion? What do you think is the best way to make the English proud of their identity?
